Parenting, Corporate Thievery, Aging, Technology, Ideals – how to be a human being in this twenty-first century? With a unique approach to the personal, the political and the intellectual, William Eaton's essays keep asking "How should we live?"

William Eaton’s Surviving the Twenty-First Century is a delicacy full of surprises and pleasures. This little book is entertaining, yet packs a quiet intellectual wallop. While one essay tells of Eaton’s desire for humanity to tie their shoe laces properly (it could lead to world peace if everyone just did things properly) other essays explore eastern philosophy, Russian politics, circumcision, the lady in line in front of you in the store…. all will undergo inspection. Yet Eaton possesses an instrument that enables him to seemingly wander afield while remaining coherent. The stealth weapon that delivers structure and binds the book together is named Jonah. He is 12 years old. Eaton’s writing is anchored by descriptions of fatherhood; his intellectual forays defined and given meaning by his clear-eyed love for his child. Any parent will recognize those little flashes when your heart is pierced through; affection for your child bubbling over and making you senseless. You tell yourself you’ll remember this moment always. But then life trundles on, and the reverie floats away. Mr. Eaton, with humor and without gooey sentiment, suspends this sensation for readers to enjoy on command. And as to tying your shoelaces correctly, I think I agree with Mr. Eaton. It does seem that to get the big things right, you must get the small things right. And I think Jonah indeed knows that his dad is getting a whole lot right, both in his parenting skills, as well as in the pages of this thought-provoking and charming book.

Surviving the TwentyFirst Century William Eaton 9780986214639 Books Reviews

A great read through and through! Surviving the Twenty-First Century offers a guided tour of the inner workings of an intellectual's mind, a rare occurrence in today's society (to say the least). A very refreshing view of everyday life that I simply cannot recommend enough! Stop reading my comments, and start reading this wonderful book!
Eaton's book is a lovely and intellectual compilation of vignettes. At times I felt like it was a modernized Andy of Mayberry, and at others, it I felt I was engaged in conversation with world thought leaders. You will not be disappointed by this wonderful read.
I just finished reading this book of essays--and I want more! My favorite so far is the one on p. 122, "Nurture." It's just so thought-provoking
and so poetic that I didn't want it to end!

I think the mark of an excellent piece of writing is that it makes the reader want to respond in some way. That's exactly how I felt.I hope to read more by this author very soon.
When I was a summer intern at a major Boston law firm, a partner made a light remark about a research paper I had written. I asked the senior associate who was my assigned mentor “Should I be thinking about this?” His reply “Never don’t think.”

William Eaton never doesn’t think. In Surviving, his slender new book of short and shorter essays -- only slightly larger than a and considerably lighter, so you can easily carry it about with you to dip into now and then -- he thoughtfully and gracefully examines his experiences as father, wage earner, consumer, citizen, dreamer, ethicist. You will learn what he thinks about hot dog vendors in the park ripping people off; the attractive woman ahead of him in the supermarket checkout line; thinking versus just being; proper uses of public space; naps; starting over in mid-life; the meaning of “food issues”; forms of corporate stealing; why Jerome Robbins may have had to give testimony before HUAC; why disbelievers attend church or temple; raising a houseplant; raising a child. (Spoiler alert his son gets the best lines.)

You may not always (or ever) agree with him. I would contend he’s on the wrong side regarding infant circumcision and whether communism in the Soviet Union had enough of a chance. But I don’t always agree with Montaigne either. For the price of a sandwich plus tax, Eaton’s little book could start you thinking about your own life, perhaps in ways you never before considered. When you get to the end, you might even want to read it again.
