I really enjoyed this book. The author goes deep into the characters and he intersperses their current life with the past paths that led them to their place in the book. Very well crafted. Thoughtful and detailed enough to provide the reader with an insight into the complexity of their lives and what they were doing in WWI. I highly recommend this book. I could not put it down. My only questions is "when is the sequel coming out?"Product details

This is a book not to be missed. Beautifully developed characters are woven into a compelling, well-told story. You are right there in the air battles and actually feel the capabilities and limits of these early planes. It is very well written and a story you will carry with you long after you turn the last page.
The first world war is the setting for Endure the Dawn. It is a story of early aviation told from the point of view of two young men who come of age in Gresham, Minnesota and who join the early RAF to fight in France. It is the personal perspective of these two individuals that makes the book come to life and allows the reader to share the experiences of these two young men, both highs and low.
The story has numerous flying sequences that provide insights into how aviation was maturing at the time as well as the fear that pilots experienced facing a foe that often had better equipment. While written flying sequences can be confusing and difficult to comprehend, the ones here are not – possibly because they are told from a single point of view. I also found it useful to look up pictures of the aircraft mentioned in the book – the pilots were brave men indeed.
It is a very good read, I highly recommend it.
This is a gem of a novel and a terrific achievement in war fiction. David Bly is a gifted and colorful storyteller with a deep knowledge of his historical material. He writes with loving enthusiasm for early aviation as well as sober appreciation of the horrors that awaited young pilots in the skies above the trenches of World War One. Bly is always genuine. You feel the action as you read it, from the wondrous exhilaration of a boy taken for his first plane ride to the terror of a rookie fighter pilot struggling through survival maneuvers as bullets rip through the thin fabric of his aircraft. Just as you feel the action, you come to know the wonderful characters in this memorable story of friendship, adventure, tragedy, and love.
This was a great read. I thought I knew a fair amount about WWI combat aviation, but the detail interspersed through the story-driven narrative was super learning material for me.
I think my favorite aspect of the book is that it really puts you in the mind of Americans who came of age during the Great War. The characters are not contemporary people set in another time, but authentically different; their drives and aspirations and motivations are from this historical time.
A fine trip to a different era, when aviation was nascent and dynamic.
I thought the author did a wonderful job of capturing the sentiment of the time in which this story takes place. The characters felt very real, and it was obvious Mr. Bly knows his subject. The book goes beyond a story about flying, and the war, and delves into the lasting emotional impact of war and all it brings, and how it changed the characters and their loved ones lives forever. This is an extremely well-written book that will satisfy anyone interested in airplanes, flying, the reality of war, or who just enjoys a story with depth. Well done, Mr. Bly.
It was an excellent read. A great story filled with interesting facts concerning the historical backdrop. The author truly knows his subject matter.
